Rainbow Balloons Birthday Card

Thanks for stopping by. Today I have a colourful card with rainbows all over. I had so much fun making this card. Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE rainbows. Maybe that’s part of the reason I wanted to come to Ireland in the first place. I didn’t think about the fact that it takes rain (which there is no shortage of in Ireland) to make a rainbow!

The best part about this card is it can be used for virtually anyone, and in a variety of situations. I used a birthday sentiment on this version, but it could also be used as a congratulatory card for a retirement, graduation or any other celebration. You could also give this to a man, woman, or child! Oh, the possibilities!

I got the inspiration for this card from the Lawnscaping Card Challenge where the theme is rainbows. I’ve never submitted to the Lawnscaping Challenge before so I’m excited this will be my debut entry.

I used several products by Lawn Fawn with a few coloured cardstock from Stampin’ UP! and sequins from Lucy’s Cards.

I started off by using Lawn Fawn Stripey Backdrop Die and cut it several times over. Once in each colour and finally in white. I played with the idea of using the teal green colour as the border and main base but it seemed like a bit of overkill once I had the other colours in. The white seemed to allow the other colours to pop a bit more. I used the inlay die technique using the white die cut as the base and took the stripes out of each coloured die cut and placed in the cutouts to create a background that looks like it’s one solid piece. Then I used Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Rectangle Frame die (the largest of the set) and glued it to the top. I love these frames and how they coordinate with all of Lawn Fawn’s background dies. I just think the stitched frame really gives the card a finished look and I use them in almost every card where I use a background die!

Next, I got to work die cutting all of the balloons. I used Lawn Fawn’s Party Balloons die set and cut out each balloon in the coordinating cardstock. This die set even comes with the little white pieces that are meant to look like light reflection. Since they are meant to be shiny, I decided to use clear embossing powder to give it that shine. I thought about using Ranger Glossy Accents but that takes a bit longer to dry and I was crafting in a hurry! They are quite small and fiddly so I had to use my We R Memory Keepers Quick Stick to help me get the small pieces in place.

Instead of using the included string dies in the set, I thought it would be fun to use baker’s twine for the strings. I simply tied them on and secured with tape on the back before I used foam tape to adhere them all to the background. After I got the first three balloons taped to the background, I realised that I was working on an upside-down rainbow. I went back and forth about whether I should pull them up and turn the card over, but I decided it was a happy accident. I knew I wanted to add the sequins and I think if I’d had the same colour balloons on the same colour stripes, with the same colour sequins accents, it would be too matchy-matchy. I think having the rainbows go in opposite directions it helps to draw the eye up and around the card so no one colour has too much of the spotlight.

To finish off the card, I stamped a sentiment from Lawn Fawn’s Scripty Sayings and cut around the wording leaving a small white border. I didn’t want the sentiment to take away from all the pop of colour on the base, so I opted to use one colour ink and to simply adhere the sentiment with a touch of glue on either side. This allowed the balloon strings to have a bit of movement behind and I really love how it turned out.
