Hello and welcome, crafty friends! Today I have a cute little hippo who’s getting carried away wishing congratulations to the recipient. 🙂
This card only took about 30 minutes to make when all was said and done. And, if I were to make multiples, it would be easy peasy if I colored several hippos at once (which I did), and then do all the backgrounds at the same time.
Let’s get started on today’s card!
The first (and hardest 😦 )thing I did was to choose which adorable little hippo from Clearly Besotted’s Trouble in a Tutu and what color dress I wanted her to wear. I went for my favorite Copic color combination (which I’m sure, comes as no surprise, my all-time favorite color) which was BG18, BG13, and BG11. Keep in mind this is a tiny image so make sure you use the BG18 very sparingly or you’ll end up with very dark dress – unless that’s the look you’re going for! After I colored my hippo, I chose what balloon I wanted from Mama Elephant’s Celebration Balloons. I chose to color that in a deep purple because I was planning the background and banner to be a bit brighter and lighter and I thought the deeper shade would balance nicely.
Next up was the banner. That and the sentiment inside are coordinating stamps in the Trouble in a Tutu set. I stamped the banner with Copic safe Memento Tuxedo Black ink then colored it in with Y11 and Y11 touched to the tip of Y15. I went light and just kept adding layers until I was happy with the blend. I shaded from the outside-in, keeping the center white to give it plenty of highlight and depth. I stamped the sentiment using my most favorite purple ever – it’s from Hero Arts MMH May 2017 and its called Amethyst. I am sorry to say it’s not one of their standard colors but maybe one day?!
With my colored pieces all done, I fussy cut them out (there are coordinating dies for both sets but I don’t own them) and put them to the side while I focused on the background.
While the idea was she was floating in the sky, I wanted it to have a more whimsical feel, so I used a pretty pastel color combination of Distress Inks: Worn Lipstick, Mustard Seed, and Tumbled Glass. I used my beloved Ink Dusters and was easily able to lightly build up to the amount of ink coverage since they apply and blend ink like a dream! I used Strathmore Bristol Smooth Cardstock as I find it works a treat when ink blending! To add just a bit of more interest, I flicked a few water drops all over the panel, then blotted with a paper towel after just a few seconds. (I didn’t want them to be super subtle and not too distracting.)
I used my tape runner to adhere my ink blended panel to a piece of Lawn Fawn Peacock Cardstock trimmed to give just the tiniest hint of color around the blended panel. Then I adhered that to an A2 Simon Says Stamp Side Fold Card Base.
Last thing to do was to lay my colored images down (where I planned to adhere them), then used a ruler and black pen to draw the balloon strings. Last, I added foam tape to the back of my colored images and adhered them, and lots of pretty sequins onto the panel.
Well, that’s all for today. Thanks for stopping by and as always…
See Y’all next time!
